15-year-old Douglas swimmer in ICU

A 15-year-old Douglas High student is in intensive care after an incident at a swim meet last week.

Molly Lahlum was competing for the Douglas Tiger swim team at the Carson Aquatics Center on Tuesday when, immediately after finishing a race, she did not exit the pool.

She was taken out of the water and administered CPR. From there she was taken to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center and then brought to the pediatric intensive care unit at Renown Medical Center.

Her vital signs are stable. She has regained consciousness several times since the incident but medical staff is keeping her slightly sedated to ensure that she stays relaxed and comfortable until they are ready to take her out of the ICU.

"The exact cause of this accident has not been determined at this time and there is no clear indicator as to what might have caused this," Pat Lahlum, Molly's brother, said in an e-mail to The Record-Courier. "So far, she has had positive test results and is showing signs of improvement.

"I'm still very concerned for her. She has a ways to go but my sister is strong. Our family is hoping and praying for her and it really helps to know we have so many people supporting us. My mom, dad and I want to thank the whole community for all the encouragement."
