Darlene Grice Hayward was born Aug. 12, 1911, to John and Josephine Caldwell Grice in Sundance, Wyo., where she grew up, attended school, and worked with her father in his hardware and lumber business.
She met and married her first husband, Jesse J. Stahl. Two sons were born, John Samuel and Jerry Jay. She later went to California, where she met and married Edward Niles Hayward. In 1962, they moved to Hemet, where she lived until her death on August 13, 2009, surrounded by family at home.
She enjoyed traveling in later years with her dear friend, Velma Walker, to faraway places. She loved to write poetry, watch the Dodgers, attend Calvary Chapel Fellowship and be with friends and family.
She will be greatly missed by her granddaughters, Lana Rauch (Eric), and Stacy Stahl (Darrel), both of Carson City, and grandson Troy Stahl of Smith Valley, Nev. Also missing her are great-grandchildren Sharon, Marques, Phillip, Shane, Shawnee, Vanessa and Tallon, and her great-great-grandchildren Luis, Issic, Alanna and Micah. She also leaves her sister Theresa Duncan of Lander, Wyo., and three nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a little sister Lola Jane, her husband Edward, her sons John and Jerry, and her grandsons Shawn Stahl and little Jesse J. Stahl.
Interment was private at Desert Lawn Cemetery in Calimesa, Calif.
Services were entrusted to the care of Hemet Valley Mortuary, (951) 658-4433, Del Mathews, director.
