Lowry wins 3A wrestling title

The Dayton boys basketball team fell 70-66 at Spring Creek Saturday. Tannar Wood led the Dust Devils with 31 points. Jay Koch and Chris Sikora each chipped in 10.

Dayton fell to 7-3 in Northern 3A play and 12-9 overall. Friday night the Dust Devils defeated Lowry, 57-45, behind Wood's 28 points and Sikora's 10. The score was incorrect in Saturday's Appeal.

Dayton returns to action Wednesday night at home against Fernley.

Virginia City girls defeat Coleville

Gigi and Sophia Glogovac scored 39 points leading the Virginia City varsity girls basketball team to a 62-30 victory over Coleville Saturday. Gigi led the way with 26 points while Sophia added 13. The Muckers used a 25-point third quarter to pull away. The Muckers improve to 22-5 and 12-0 in conference. Virginia City returns to action Friday hosting Sierra Lutheran and Saturday at Pyramid Lake.

Virginia City boys fall to Coleville

Foul trouble hurt the Virginia City boys basketball team in a 58-46 loss to Coleville. Zach Shell led the Muckers with 19 points. Hunter Redmond added nine. The teams were trading baskets into the fourth quarter where Coleville used a 20-point fourth to clinch the win.

The Muckers fall to 8-4 in the league. Virginia City returns to action Friday hosting Sierra Lutheran and Saturday at Pyramid Lake.

Lowry wins 3A wrestling title

Lowry took home the Northern 3A wrestling title Saturday at Yerington. Lowry won six weight divisions and finished second in five others. Spring Creek was second, Fernley third, Yerington fourth, Sparks fifth, Truckee sixth and Dayton seventh.

The top five finishers out of the Northern League regional and the top three placers out of the Southern League regional advance to the eight-person state championship meet next weekend at Winnemucca Events Center. The championship half of the bracket will be single-elimination while the consolation half of the bracket will be double-elimination through fourth place.

Local qualifiers for the meet are:

- Fernley's Alesha Stoffel at 103 pounds; Hazyn McGrath at 135 pounds; Michael Cutts at 140 pounds; Tucker Taylor at 152 pounds; A.J. Estrada at 171 pounds; Josh Cutts won the 189 pound category; and Pablo Gomez at 275 pounds.

- Yerington's Cody Villalobos at 112 pounds; Tanner Trout at 119 pounds; Blaine Tibbals at 125 pounds; Rachael Skroch at 125 pounds; Tyrell Cummings at 135 pounds; Jean Cota and Russell Lacey at 140 pounds; Fernley's Cody Crader at 145; Wesley Taliaferro at 160 pounds; Robert Snider at 215 pounds; and Michael Snider.

- Dayton's Kyle Firestone at 152 pounds; Fernley's Tucker Taylor at 152; Chris Ellis at 189 pounds and Jeremiah Marshall at 215 pounds.

Virginia City volleyball defeats Silver Stage

The Virginia City Middle School seventh grade volleyball team defeated the Silver Stage team on Wednesday, 25-17, 22-25 and 15-10. Heather Redman from Virginia City helped lift her team to victory with five aces, and no missed serves.

The Virginia City eighth grade team defeated Silver Stage, 26-24, 25-14. The first game was closely contested, as both teams exhibited early season nerves, but Silver Stage was unable to withstand Virginia City's momentum in the second game.

"We haven't had many practices, but the girls are finally beginning to gel. If we can just get our serves over, we'll be fine," said Virginia City coach Patti Poston.
