More rain and possible thunderstorms are expected to continue through the weekend in Carson City.
The National Weather Service in Reno said a low-pressure weather system that had stayed off the coast of California last week will sweep through Northern Nevada this week.
The weather has made this one of the top 10 wettest Junes on record in Northern Nevada, said Kyle Mozley, a weather service meteorologist. He said 1.29 inches of rain has fallen this month.
A few more hundredths of an inch of rain will move this month into one of the top five wettest Junes on record, he said.
Rain is common in June, but so much rain in a short period of time is unusual, he said.
Today there is a 10-percent chance of rain after 11 a.m. It will be mostly cloudily with a high near 72 degrees.
Thursday there is a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. It will be mostly cloudily with a high near 71 degrees.
Friday there will be a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. It will be mostly cloudily with a high near 72 degrees.
Saturday, Sunday and Monday there will be some chance of rain and thunderstorms. It will be mostly cloudily wit a high near 70 degrees.
The rain has helped fight the moderate drought in the area, but it hasn't been enough to stop it, said Hydrologist Gary Barbato of the National Weather Service in Reno.
Runoff from mountain snow was low this year, he said, and that is a difficult problem to overcome.
Carson City got 61 percent of its normal runoff, he said. Many areas around Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada got about 75 percent of normal runoff, he said. Lovelock did worst, with about 37 percent of normal runoff, he said.
But he levels aren't likely low enough in the area to result in new restrictions on water use, he said.
Carson City called for two voluntary water restrictions last summer. The city blamed the restrictions on hot temperatures, declining creek flows and work on the Marlette-Hobart Water Supply System
"We're plugging along," Barbato said.
