Thunderstorms likely all week

More rain and possible thunderstorms are expected to continue through the weekend in Carson City.

The National Weather Service in Reno said a low-pressure weather system off the coast of California will sweep through Northern Nevada this week.

The weather has made this one of the top 10 wettest Junes on record in Northern Nevada, said Kyle Mozley, a weather service meteorologist. He said 1.29 inches of rain has fallen this month.

A few more hundredths of an inch will move this month into one of the top five wettest Junes on record, he said.

Today there is a 10 percent chance of rain after 11 a.m. It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 72 degrees.

Thursday and Friday there is a 20 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 71 degrees.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday there will be some chance of rain and thunderstorms. It will be mostly cloudy with a high near 70 degrees.

The rain has helped fight the moderate drought in the area, but it hasn't been enough to stop it, said hydrologist Gary Barbato of the National Weather Service in Reno.

Runoff from mountain snow was low this year, he said, and that is a difficult problem to overcome.

Carson City got 61 percent of its normal runoff, he said. Many areas around Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada got about 75 percent of normal runoff, he said. Lovelock did worst, with about 37 percent of normal runoff, he said.

But the low levels likely aren't drastic enough to result in new water use restrictions, he said.
