Derek Mayer and Western Nevada College's Jeff Barto gave the Nevada
Bighorns summer college baseball team impressive starts on the mound
to lead a doubleheader sweep of the San Francisco Seagulls on Sunday
at John L. Harvey Field.
The Bighorns won the opener 8-1 and the nightcap 12-4. In the opener
Mayer allowed one run on five hits over five innings. Ryan Shepherd
and Blake Nahlem each pitched a scoreless inning for the Bighorns.
Offensively for the Bighorns, Brett Lisher and Eric Maupin each went
2-for-4 with an RBI, Jeff Young was 1-for-3 with two RBI, Adam
Anderson was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Matt Winter was 2-for-3 with an
RBI and Kevin Schlange and Travis Ice each added a hit.
Barto allowed one run on three hits over five innings in the nightcap.
Young got the Bighorns off to a fast start when he belted a two-run
home run in the first inning. Young, Ice and Anderson all had two
hits, D.J. Brady was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Schlage and Sam Feiner each
had two hits and an RBI and Sean Costella went 1-for-3 with an RBI for
the Bighorns (8-6).
The Bighorns will next play when they begin a four-game series against
the Lodi Grapesox in Lodi, Calif., beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday.
