The Carson City School District's Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program will be performing for The Sertoma Club's Christmas luncheon on Wednesday.

The program performs every year and has done it for many years. Every year, the Sertoma Club gives the program a very generous donation that they have raised throughout the year.

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program has been able to fund video relay service in the classroom at the high school, state-of-the-art FM systems for hard of hearing students, field trips (even a couple to Washington, D.C. to visit Gallaudet, a college for deaf students), computers, the latest technology for deaf and hard of hearing students, and many other things with their donations.

This week's senior spotlight is on Jessica Fleming. She has a grade-point average of 4.2 with classes in web design III, health occupations, honors trigonometry, AP government, human anatomy and AP English literature.

Her future plans include becoming a doctor or web designer and attending UNR.

She is very involved in school being the treasurer for National Honor Society, vice president of CHS Key Club, a member of the varsity tennis team, bowling team, HOSA, American Legion Auxiliary, and Skills USA. We are proud of Jessica.

Congratulations to Mrs. Chandler and Ms. Fagundes, social studies teachers at Carson High, who just returned from presenting to the International Assembly during the National Conference for Social Studies in Denver, Colo.

They were selected to present a lesson about teaching culture in a World History classroom through the P.E.R.S.I.A.N. model of cultural analysis.

Mrs. Chandler also was selected to present a primary source lesson during the poster sessions. Prior to presenting in Colorado, both teachers also were chosen to present at the Northern Nevada Conference on social studies at Damonte High School in Reno.

Congratulations on the fantastic work of the Carson High Honor Society. The best of the best helping our community.

We collected 15 bags of kids winter clothes that went to our elementary schools.

We donated $1,000 to pay for turkeys and pies for 90 families for Thanksgiving dinner.

Our school collected more than 144 units of blood during our fall blood drive.

Thank you for all the volunteering and fundraising efforts you make.

Also, Toys for Tots are in full swing. The deadline to bring toys is Dec. 15. Help spread joy to those less fortunate.

• Erin Been is a health teacher at Carson High School and a member of Senator Pride.
