Toys for Tots collected an estimated $10,000 worth of toys and other Christmas gifts for the needy Friday.

The annual event is organized by the Capitol Police but has expanded over the years to include numerous agencies in and around the Capitol complex.

Officer Mike Rubio said there were barrels to collect donations at the Capitol, attorney general's office, Supreme Court, DMV, Department of Education, State Library and the Bryan Building.

The organization also received a $1,000 check from the Nevada Peace Officers Association as well as a number of smaller cash contributions, said Sgt. Randy Smith.

He said the drive was aimed this year at children from three to 13 years old.
