Obituary: Gerald St. Legar-Barter

Gerald St. Legar-Barter was born on Long Island, N.Y., on November 2, 1930. He died Feb. 8, 2010, in Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center from cardiopulmonary problems.

He survived WWII in England and returned to America in 1946. He married Christine and raised his children mostly in Livermore, Calif. As a 1952 graduate of University of Cincinnati in electrical engineering he specialized in telemetry. He was also a member of the Army ROTC. He served in the active U.S. Army Ordinance Group from 1952 to 1955.

For many years as a civilian pilot he was a member of the Beechcraft Bonanza club. He personally flew and maintained this fine aircraft.

After graduation he was assigned by the Lawrence Livermore Lab to selected locations to monitor the underground tests held around Camp Mercury, Nev. After retirement he moved to Carson City in 1996.

Gerald served as the historian for American Legion High Desert Post 56. He was a certified member of the Northern Nevada All Veteran Honor Guard. He held membership in the Leisure Hour Club, the Roadrunners RV Club and the Sagebrush Chapter of the Model A Ford Club.

Gerald is survived by wife Christine; son Stanley and wife Kathy of Scotts Valley, Calif.; daughter Laura of Sonoma, Calif.; brother Carl Topie of Milford, Ohio; and four grand-children.

Gerald will be buried will full military honors in the veterans section at Lone Mountain Cemetery at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 20.
