130 YEARS AGO

Last night the city trustees adopted an ordinance to keep teen hoodlums in check after hours. Trustees adopted an ordinance keeping those under 18 out of bars and prohibiting barkeepers from selling alcohol to those under 18. No one under 18 can be on the streets after 9 p.m. without the consent of a parent or guardian, or in the presence of a parent or guardian. The ordinance also prohibits those under 18 from visiting houses of ill fame or being in the presence of a Chinese woman. Violation of the ordinance can bring a jail term up to 50 days or a fine of $100.

100 YEARS AGO

John Eagan, formerly state treasurer relates this story: In the early 60's in a small Idaho mining town there came a storm and the local grocer decided to start charging $3 per pound instead of the normal $1. Nothing to sustain life could be gotten elsewhere. A committee of miners was formed, threw the storekeeper out and started charging $1 per pound. After the snow, the storekeeper was allowed back under full accounting given his $1 per pound. This illustrates that Judge Lynch, in a pinch, is better than Judge Law. Viva Mr. Lynch.

A wildflower extravaganza is expected shortly in Death Valley, where a record 1.32 inches of rain fell in September. Fifty different species of flowers are in bloom, says the National Park Service.
