Carson culinary team goes for repeat win

Carson High School will try to defend its title this week at the eighth annual Nevada ProStart Invitational on Tuesday at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.

Carson City has a tough challenge in that the management competition has undergone a complete overhaul, making it much tougher to gauge their readiness to win their third-straight title. With the new concept and rules for the management division, each competing school has a legitimate shot at placing first.

At stake are scholarships and a chance to compete at the national competition, April 30-May 2 in Kansas.

More than 210 high school students from 25 schools throughout Nevada will compete for as much as $336,000 in scholarship money at the state competition. This year will be the first time that the event has been held up north.

The competition is organized in four categories:

Team culinary: Preparation of a three-course meal in

60 minutes.

Team management: Written and verbal presentation of unique restaurant concept.

Individual cake decorating: Demonstrate piping and decorative skills.

Individual knife skills: Carving skills and creativity in putting together a fruit and vegetable edible centerpiece.

Winners in each category will be announced during the ProStart awards ceremony and banquet at Circus Circus Reno. Other awards to be presented at the ceremony include Chef Mentor of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and Student of the Year.

ProStart is a career-building program of the National Restaurant Association that offers classroom study, mentored work experience, and local and national competitions.
