130 YEARS AGO

Dr. Banks McKenzie, a temperance orator, is expected in town in the next couple days. It is understood by some temperance people that he has been waylayed on the railroad by paid assassins, perhaps in the employ of the wholesale liquor dealers. His coming is looked forward to with considerable anxiety by members of the reform club, some who have been holding onto their pledges with a failing grip in the past few months. Some feel the need for someone to come forward and brace them up for another wrestle with the hydra-headed serpent of intemperance.

100 YEARS AGO

The new MacDonald Theater will open with a matinee of the following films: Wright's Aeroplane; the Government tests at Fort Meyer; The Indian Runner's Romance; The Bugle Call and The Romance. Mr. Howard will give his rendition of "I'd rather float through a dreamy old waltz with you."

70 YEARS AGO

Captain N. C. Brown of the Nevada National Guard met with the 20-30 Club to discuss a very timely topic, national defense. In his talk, Brown stated that "defense is good government and defense is good citizenship."

50 YEARS AGO

Sweden's Sixten Jernberg, a 31-year-old sporting goods salesman, became the first gold medal winner at the Winter Olympic Games in Squaw Valley when he won the 30 kilometer cross country race.

20 YEARS AGO

The Nevada Appeal is looking for old newspapers for its 125th anniversary edition.

10 YEARS AGO

A submarine will descend into the deep next month to take the best pictures of the S.S. Tahoe since the ship was scuttled some 60 years ago.
