CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Legislature's Interim Finance Committee is scheduled to meet this afternoon to try to hammer out solutions the day before they convene in special session to address Nevada's $880 million budget hole.

Tuesday's special session called by Gov. Jim Gibbons begins at 9 a.m. in Carson City.

Gibbons has proposed roughly 10 percent budget cuts for most state agencies.

But lawmakers during hearings held the past two weeks say while cuts are unavoidable, they worry about taking $200 million from public schools. Education administrators say that could mean thousands of teacher layoffs.

The first day of the special session will cost taxpayers $100,000. Every day after that is another $50,000.
