VIRGINIA CITY (AP) - Longtime Reno television personality John Tyson says he's leaving the airways to run for Storey County sheriff.

The 65-year-old Tyson says his last day on the air at KOLO-TV was Friday.

He began working for the ABC affiliate in 1986, and was best known for his regular feature titled, "John Tyson's Journal," which focused on rural Nevada and interesting characters in the state.

The Virginia City man says he decided to run for sheriff because he wants a "new adventure" and he wants to put his experience to work for the county.

He has been a part-time employee with the Storey sheriff's office for 23 years.
