The Carson High School MASH (Mandatory Academic Study Hall) program concluded last week with a pizza luncheon for the ninth-graders in the program who significantly improved their grades.
The enrichment portion of the program culminated two weeks ago with students creating dish gardens to present to their mothers for Mother's Day.
Dean of Students Michelle Lewis coordinated the dish garden project. Other enrichment activities involved cooking personal pizzas in culinary arts, computer design and 3D animation projects, pounding out dents in auto body class, working with web design, and creating "bugs" in ceramics.
Funded through a 21st Century grant, MASH is designed to assist ninth-graders with the transition into high school.
By providing a quiet place to study and to complete assignments along with one-on-one tutoring and mentoring, the program provides a better opportunity for struggling students to get started off on the right foot in high school.
There's no doubt that the 9th grade year is crucial to high school success and to potential graduation, and MASH is a program addressing that concern.
