MINDEN - A 34-year-old Carson City woman, accused of draining more than $4,000 from her brother's bank account while he was deployed overseas, is to enter a plea Dec. 6 in District Court to a theft charge.
Kristi Lynn Reed was charged with theft, attempted theft and forgery in connection with the missing money. According to reports, Reed reportedly wrote 24 checks to herself and friends totaling more than $4,000 on her brother's credit union account.
The crime was discovered when her brother, reviewing his account online, discovered it was overdrawn by $594.34 and recognized his sister's handwriting on the check facsimiles.
The victim's father reported the crime to authorities. He said the suspect, who is his daughter, stays at his Bluerock residence occasionally when her brother is not home.
That's where she had access to the checks among her brother's belongings.
The checks were written between July 12 and Aug. 16.
Reed reportedly told authorities she spent the money on food and hotel rooms for herself and friends because she was homeless. She also said she planned to use the money to move the California for a fresh start.
Reed was questioned by Douglas authorities while she was incarcerated in Carson City.
In addition to stealing from her brother, Reed reportedly admitted stealing and attempting to cash two checks on her father's credit card. Those checks were denied because the credit card had expired.
She turned herself in to Douglas County authorities on Sept. 20.
