What started as another season of women's tennis back in Sept. 2009, turned out to be a year-long journey to nationals.

The USTA Women's 3.5 Senior team from Zephyr Cove, comprised of eight area women, including Carson High tennis coach Diane Baker-Roberts, and seven players from outside the area, competed at Indian Wells Tennis Gardens in Palm Desert, Calif. on Oct. 8-10 and won the title by taking two out of three matches from a Florida team.

Linda Vollenhalls and Charna Knerr won the deciding match in a tie-breaker.

"We waited five months to go to nationals," Julie Zeid said. "That time was spent practicing and staying in condition, knowing full well that the competition would be tough.

"We had to keep winning at least two of our three matches to stay above the rest and advance to the semifinals on Sunday morning."

The team advanced to nationals by winning league, district and sectional titles. The team lost just once in league and was undefeated in district play.

Members of the 15-person team are captain Karen Neri, Baker-Roberts, JoJo Conroy, Becky Darrow, Susan Glasson, Yrma Haro, Carel James, Knerr, Becky Lebuhn, Carla Paterson, Eddi Quiggle, May Rey, Vollenhalls, Patty Yamano and Julie Zeid.

Carson put the game away on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Connor Pradere to Gage Gunzburg. The defense played well all night led by Jordan Aikins, Alex Estrada and Conner Larkin.
