COMMUNITY SPORTS: Jepsen to speak at WNC fundraiser

Western Nevada College will host an evening of dinner and baseball lore on Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Peppermill Hotel-Casino, Reno.

This year's annual fundraiser for WNC will feature Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Kevin Jepsen. Jepsen, a Bishop Manogue High School graduate, is a right-handed reliever and a member of the bronze medal-winning team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The event includes a three-course dinner, hosted beer and wine, raffle, and both live and silent auctions. Tickets cost $75 or $700 for a table of 10 for tickets purchased prior to Jan. 1. On or after Jan. 1, tickets will be $100 each or $1,000 for a table of 10.

This year, participants also have the option to help support a Nevada high school baseball or softball program by attending the Wildcats athletics fundraiser. Fifty percent of their net ticket proceeds ($15) may be directed to the Nevada high school softball or baseball team of their choice.

Carson Jr. Midgets end year with loss

The Carson Senators Jr. Midgets wrapped up their final game of the season in Santa Clara on Nov. 27 with a 36-14 loss to the Campbell Bears.

Carson struggled the first half of the game to put any points on the board, trailing 16-0. Caden Lehman had an interception in the endzone late in the first quarter.

Carson got something going in the third quarter when Colby Brown had a 70-yard kick return for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Brown threw a 35-yard pass to Jonathan Ramirez who then ran 15 yards for a touchdown.

Volleyball clinic set

for this weekend

Former Stanford All-American and two-time gold medalist Kerri Walsh, and her husband, Troy Jennings are coming to Carson City for volleyball clinics on Saturday and Sunday at the Capital City Volleyball Club.

There will be four clinics each day. The first is from

8 to 10:30 a.m., the second from 10:30 a.m. to

1 p.m., the third is from

2 to 4:30 p.m. and the final clinic goes from 4:30 to

7 p.m.

The focus of the clinic will be on perfecting the fundamental skills of the sport and correcting skills and technique. There will be a King/Queen of the Court for players 14 and up, and there will be hands-on training.

The cost is $160 per person, and each time slot is limited to 14 players.

Dean's Machine holds lead in Comstock Division

Dean's Machine leads All Work & No Play in the Comstock Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Dean's has 907 points compared to 900 for All Work & No Play. Poke 'N' Hope and 9-Spoke are tied for third with 891.

Alex Gutierrez (Dean's Machine) leads the 6-9 tier with 33 points, five better than Don Allred of Scratch Masters. Robert Wilson of Poke 'N' Hope leads the

4-5 tier with 59 points, while Chester Chastain of Scratch Masters is well back in second with

40 points. Lawrence Gloistein of 9-Spoke and Rachel Hurt of Rattlers leads the 1-3 tier with

30 points apiece. James Panos of Rack Busters is third with 28.

In the Mosconi Division, it's a six-way battle for the top spot. Jerry's Kids currently leads with 46 points, while Role Models is second at 44. AltF4, Big Dogs, Rack Fink and Support Rackless Habits are tied for third with 42 points.

6-7 tier with 33 points, three ahead of Rack Busters' Edwin Scrivner. Mike Snoddy of Cues Yer Daddy leads the 4-5 tier with 34 points, while Justin Leuty of Big Dogs is second with 28. Janice Cameron of The Spoke leads the 2-3 tier with 38 points, while Josiah Toledo of Young and Reckless is second with 31.
