Nobody Asked Us, But ...Take the train and look at the fall colors

The V&T rides again. They have been doing very well with sold-out trips to Virginia City, but now have extended the line toward the Carson River Canyon and will hold trips there every Saturday at 5 p.m. for $15 each through the end of October. They also have added a new 72-passenger car, called the "Carson City," to the train. Call the CC Convention & Visitors Bureau at 687-7410 for tickets and information. V&T engineer Jerry Hoover is featured in AAA's Via magazine this month. Thomas the Tank Engine would be envious.

Lots going on ... St. Teresa's Basque Festival is taking place at Fuji Park today starting at 11 a.m. There will be a free Star Party at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at 8 p.m. Saturday featuring a talk on the Apollo moon mission. You get to look through the telescopes, too. The Genoa Candy Dance will take place next weekend. Be sure to drop by TJ Saputra's Indonesian Barbeque out there. TJ, who works at The Basil, has a booth and will be serving up the best of tasty treats.

A big get well to Charlie Abowd, who underwent some surgery last week. And thanks, Charlie, for always being nice. Carolyn would like to thank the crossing guards in all the school zones in town. As she drives into work each day, they are always smiling, cheerful and courteous as they protect the children. Way to go, gals and guys. And M wants to thank the outpatient troops at CTRMC for always being top-notch ... after her recent bronchoscopy, they served her hot chocolate (M thinks that's why she goes there instead of Starbucks ... right). But, everyone is great.

Bob Herzog tells us it's time for the Darwin Awards again (from the Internet): "After stopping for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean bus driver found that the 20 mental patients he was transporting had escaped. Not wanting to admit his incompetence, the driver went to a nearby bus stop and offered everyone waiting there a free ride. He then delivered the passengers to the mental hospital, telling the staff that the patients were very excitable and prone to bizarre fantasies. The deception wasn't discovered for three days."

Former Carson City resident Deena Lien Richards and her 14-year-old son, Quinn, are heading to Leogane, Haiti, the epicenter of the January 2010 earthquake, in November or December to help remove rubble there. Eighty percent of the rubble still has to be removed before the people can rebuild.
