Dave Mello and Jeff Gussow combined for a 10-under-par 62 to win the opening tournament of the season at Thunder Canyon Country Club.
Finishing second were Charlie and J.T. Cockerill who combined for a 64. The teams of Fran Menante and John Anderson and Mike Schellin and Bret Andreas tied for third with 65s. Steve Archer and Dave Nielsen placed fifth at 66.
Karen Hoppe, Becky Martinelli and Nancy Maloy combined for a 60 to win the women's event. Lynn Greenman, Shelly Brewster-Meredith and Donna Schellin were second with a 61.
Umphries, Coons tie in Stableford event
Ed Umphries and Russ Coons tied for first in Flight A with a score of 38 in the Carson Valley Men's Club Stableford Tournament.
Bob Pemberton and Daryle Lewis tied for third with 36, also in Flight A.
Neil Bain won Flight B with a 48, while John Guidicatti was next with 40 and Bruce Sanford was third with a 37.
Paul, Lewis win at Empire Ranch
Nick Paul and John Lewis shot a net 132 to win Flight A at the Empire Ranch Men's Club Better Drive Tournament.
Wes Franklin and James Dowd finished second at 133, while Joe Scott and Allen Pizl were third at 134. Sharkey Chiang and Adam Huber won Flight B with a 124, seven shots ahead of Lew Dodgio and Verne Rosse. Walt Blizzard and Hans Ehrlin were third at 132.
Joe McKenna, Chris Nenzel, George Flamer and Al Citron won closest-to-the-hole honors.
Suh, Burchett win at Silver Oak
Chang Suh and Richard Burchett won their respective flights at Silver Oak's Monthly Masters event.
Suh won Flight A with a 66, one stroke better than Jim Sapien, John Owens and Mark Kaiser. Burchett shot a 66, one stroke better than Jeffrey Damario, Manny Lopez and Shawn Mott.
Bill Prowse won closest-to-the-hole honors at No. 12.
McRae brothers fare well in Colorado
Connor and Tobin McRae, members of the Kirkwood Freeride team, fared well at the United States of America Snowboard Association event at Copper Mountain, Colorado recently.
Tobin was first in skier cross for boys 9 and under, was 10th in slopestyle and 10th overall. Connor was 10th in skier cross in the 10-12 division.
Twisted Stix leads Comstock Division
Twisted Stix with Attitude has a 1120-1119 lead over Yabba Dabba Cue in the Comstock Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.
Don Allred of Rack Busters has a 47-42 lead over teammate Kenneth Gabbard in the 6-9 tier. Jeff Cordova of All Work & No Play has a 46-44 lead over Mike Snoddy of Yabba Dabba Cue in the 4-5 tier. Lisa McCuiston of Tied & Soldiered is third at 39. Caren Adkins of Tied & Soldiered leads the 1-3 tier with 44 points, 12 ahead of Tami Beasley of Yabba Dabba Cue.
Jerry's Shooters has a 56-54 lead over Squeeze Play in the Black Widow Division. Don Allred of Good Guys & Bad Guys leads the 6-7 tier with 47 points, four better than Eric Dereng of Jerry's Shooters. Mike Snoddy of Cues Yer Daddy leads the 4-5 tier with 42 points, 10 better than Bradley Dabe of Squeeze Play. Rachel Hurt of Cues Yer Daddy leads the 2-3 tier 32-30 over Caren Adkins of The Spoke,
Big Dogs and Unintentional Defense are tied for the lead in the Mosconi Division. Each team has 56 points. Julie Hunter of Unintentional Defense and teammate Jack Parish are 1-2 in the 6-7 tier with 51 and 49 points, respectively. Joshua Stewart of AltF4 leads the 4-5 tier with 37 points, six better than Tadd Patchen of Rack Fink and Larry Knutsen of Jerry's Kids. Josiah Toledo of Rack Fink leads Markus Ricard of Jerry's Kids 36-28 in the 2-3 tier.
In the Highway 50 Division, Dayton Inn leads Pocket Puppies 63-61. Bill Howard of the VC Miners leads the 6-7 tier with 14 points. Gregory Theis of Pocket Puppies and Shawn Wilson of Dayton Inn are tied for first in the 4-5 tier with 37 points a piece. In the 2-3 tier, Derek Sheldon of Pocket Puppies has a 31-27 lead over Robert Stout of O.G. Squeeze.
Falcons compete at Dayton Invite
The Sierra Lutheran track team picked up a fifth-place finish in the boys' standings at the Dayton Invitational over the weekend.
The meet was mostly 3A schools (Sierra Lutheran is 1A in track) and only 3A schools finished ahead of the Falcons (Fallon, Fernley, Spring Creek and Dayton in order).
Nathanael Williams won the 3,200 with a time of 10:22 while John McRae fourth with a time of 10:39.2.
Nathan Conover won the 800 with a time of 2:08.2 and McRae was third in the event with a time of 2:14.8. McRae was third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:50.3.
The 4x400 relay team took second with a time of 3:36.4. The 4x200 relay team was sixth with a time of 1:42.9. The 4x800 relay team was third at 9:10.5.
Taylor Anderson was seventh in the pole vault with a leap of 10-0 and Alex Borgman took eighth in the shot put with a toss of 110-07.
On the girls' side, Sierra Lutheran's 4x800 relay team was seventh in 13:52.2 while the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams each took seventh as well.
The Falcons finished 11th in the overall standings.
Carson Sierra Youth Football signups
Carson SYFL will hold sign-ups for football and cheerleading from 12 -4 p.m. Saturday at Carson Pizza Factory, 3120 Highway 50 East.
Douglas players are welcome.
Carson SYFL, entering its third year, features Nevada high school football rules on 100 yard fields. Kids play with their peers the same age, ages 6 to 14 (not in high school).
Registration cost $175. Payment plans and financial aid available to those who qualify.
First practice is Monday, July 25, with the first game on Saturday, Aug. 13.
