The Unique Products 305/Kenda Tire team of Mike Johnson, Craig Smith, Brian Pinard and Carson City's Steve Garnett combined their talents to win the Class 30 title at the Tecate Score Baja 500.
Defending champion Francisco Septien's team got off to a quick start thanks to Scott Myers. Garnett was able to get close at the 100-mile mark. Smith took over the ride and passed Septien right before Borrego Junction, putting the team in sixth overall. Pinard rode along the coast toward Ensenada, but gave up the lead. Garnett got on the bike at Uruapan, but never caught Septien's rider.
The team thought it had finished second only to find out the following day that it had won the event and finished fourth overall.
"I'm not a real fan of the start of the race, as so many things can happen," Garnett said. "I knew they had one of the best starters in the business (Myers). All I wanted to do was get the bike to Smith in somewhat good position. I think I handed it to him in 10th."
Smith said he normally doesn't ride a Honda, so it took a bit of time to get used to it. He was happy with his effort, however.
Mike Johnson didn't do as much riding as he normally would because of an injury. He said he and team manager Robert Hansen placed a lot of importance on tire changes and hitting all the virtual check points with no speed violations.
Fontenot places 2nd in drag boat event
Paul Fontenot, a Douglas County resident, placed second in the Pro Eliminator Class at Firebird International Raceway in Arizona over Memorial Day weekend.
Fontenot qualified No. 3 in Saturday's qualifying. Unfortunately, he hit a red light by 0.016 of a second and ended up second in the event.
The team didn't race last season, and has made several changes to his boat, including rebuilding the motor. Fontenot is confident that his team will be a top contender all season.
Carson soccer team second in Tracy
The Carson Futbol Club under-12 Wolfpack team took second in the recent 24-team Tracy Orange Bowl.
The Wolfpack gave up just two goals in five games. In the final against Sacramento United, the game was tied at 1 after regulation play. Sacramento United came out on top after the shootout to win the title.
The Wolfpack has players from Gardnerville, Carson City and Reno on its roster.

Sharks win Walker River qualifier
The Carson Sharks 10 and under softball team finished second at last weekend's Walker River Qualifier.
The Sharks, playing in the Nevada Fast-Pitch Association, lost to the Gardnerville Hot Shots in the finals. No final score was reported.
On May 21-22, the Sharks won a tournament in Reno.
The team will be back in action June 11-12 in Gardnerville.

Poley, Scoville win at Silver Oak
Gary Poley and John Scoville combined for a 44 to win the Silver Oak Sr. Men's Club 2-man Stableford tournament on May 31.
Alex Talmant and Bob Lewis were second at 38, while the teams of Terry Thomas and Tony Barbaria, Chris Gottschalk and Dave Mills, and Buzz Wagner and Roland Owings tied for third at 36.
Poley, Ed Fry, Jim Silsby and Dave Mills were the closest-to-the-hole winners.
Bruisers lead pool league
The Union Bruisers have a 14-13 lead over O.G. Squeeze in the Highway 50 Division in the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.
Pocket Puppies and Dayton Inn are tied for third with 11 points apiece.
In the Comstock Division, Tied & Soldiered has an 81-80 lead over 9-Spoke. Yabba Dabba Cue is third at 75. In the Mosconi Division, The Spoke, Cues Yer Daddy and the Rattlers are tied for first with five points apiece.
In the Highway 50 Division, Casey Richards (top tier), Michael Hoopes and Kevin Lahmann (middle tier) and Joseph Sbragia (low tier) are the leaders. In the Comstock Division, Don Allred and Juan Pina are tied for the lead in the top tier, Jeff Cordova leads the middle tier and Stella Baldauskas leads the lower tier.
Alexander golf clinic on Sunday
The 19th annual Fred Alexander Memorial Family Golf Clinic is set for Sunday at Eagle Valley Golf Course from 11:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The clinic is free and registration runs from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. The clinic is open to kids between the ages of 6 and 17 and their parents.
The clinic features instruction by PGA professionals from various courses in the area. The special guest this year is Kevin Compare, a trick shot artist.

Umphies, Tavenier win at CVGC
Ed Umphies finished with a net 31 to win Flight A in Carson Valley Golf Club's Odd/Even Tournament on June 5.
Steve Norton, Dan Essary and Daryle Lewis tied for second in Flight A with a 32.
Tavenier won the B Flight with a 28. Brick Ludington was second with a 30, while John Guidicatti was third with a 34.
