Winter program features work by ‘Brrroque’ masters

Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus kicks off its 10th annual WinterFest with Brrroque Masters, a concert series dedicated to Mark Lord, TOCCATA’s principal trumpet player for the past 9 years.

The series, which runs Jan. 4, 7, 9 and 11, opens with Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets, featuring Baroque trumpeters Dwyane Hollenbach and William van Meter. Tahoe Symphony Chorus will continue with Vivaldi’s Gloria.

Nathaniel Reyes will perform Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto in E minor, guitarist Yuri Liberzon will perform Vivaldi’s Concerto for Guitar in A major, and principal oboist Nita Tune will perform Marcello’s Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor.

Vivaldi’s Gloria features Joy Strotz, Anna Helwing, and Maria Arrigotti, sopranos; with Stuart Duke and Chris Langton, baritones.

The concert on Jan. 9 will feature soprano Michelle Norris, Mark Lord’s daughter, performing Handel’s Let the Bright Seraphim from the opera Samson. Katie Lauder, harpsichord, and Nick Haines, cello, are set to perform as continuo.

Performances, all of which are conducted by James Rawie, are at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4 at St. Theresa Church, 1041 Lyons Ave. in South Lake Tahoe; at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 341 Village Blvd. in Incline Village; and at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran, 3680 Highway 395 South in Carson City. The final performance will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 501 California Ave. in Reno.

Tickets are available at the door or online at www.ToccataTahoe.com and at Tahoe City Visitor Center. General admission is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $5 for students ages 19-23 with valid ID. Preferred seating is $35 and $15 for youth/students. Youth younger than 19 are admitted free to most regular season concerts in 2015 in non-reserved seating.

All performances are supported by the Kling Family Foundation.

TOCCATA’s 10th Anniversary WinterFest continues Feb. 8-15 with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto featuring Elizabeth Pitcairn with the legendary Red Stradivarius violin, and Bach’s Gloria from the Mass in B minor.
