CAC hosts receptionfor artist Sharon Maczko

The Churchill Arts Council will present a reception for artist, Sharon Maczko, on May 31 in the galleries at the Art Center from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Maczko’s exhibition, “Interior Drama: Survey of Selected Watercolors, 1987 – 2011” is currently on view in the Classroom Gallery. The large-scale watercolors are intricately detailed works that portray an interior world of lost, forgotten and overlooked items often house in attics or storerooms.

The artist has said that she was deeply influenced by her surreptitious visits to an abandoned mansion in the neighborhood where she grew up. In all of her works, there is a kind of quiet mystery that unfolds as you look at, and ponder, the mysterious juxtapositions of seemingly everyday objects that the artist has imbued with an eerie mystery.

Coming up on June 21 is the first of the free in-the-park concerts, sponsored by the mayor, City Council and city of Fallon. The concert will feature Los Texmaniacs, the Grammy-winning Texas artists.

The band plays Tex-Mex music, a major strain of American vernacular folk music. Their Tex-Mex conjunto fuses the sounds of the large 12-string bajo sexto guitar and button accordion with Texas Rock.

Throw in a dash of well-cured Blues and some carefully styled R & B riffs and you’ve got the recipe for a lively cultural mix that draws upon the many roots that may be found in the Rio Grande valley

The result is a music deeply rooted in conjunto tradition which was born in south Texas and Mexico at the end of the nineteenth century in which electric bass and drums are added to the sounds of the accordion and bajo sexto. As noted above, their album “Borders Y Bailes” on Smithsonian Folkways Records received a Grammy Award.

Los Texmaniacs explode with contemporary vitality by including a range of musics into their repertoire from jalapeño-spiced polkas and rancheras to new versions of old country western favorites. For information, you can check out www.texmaniacs.com.
