Edward S. Kaplan was born June 15, 1926 in Chicago, IL. to Adolph and Mayme Kaplan at Grant Hospital. He was 88 when he died on October 14, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Norma Pereira, and son, David, and is survived by his daughter, Barbara Sturgis and three grandsons, Joseph Fisher, Robert, and Christopher Sturgis and his best friend since 1990, Mary (Mosey) Covington of Carson City. Mr. Kaplan served in the U.S. Air force and the Strategic Air Command for over six years during World War II and the Korean War as a staff sergeant on B-29 and B-50 bombers. He was a command remote control turret mechanic gunner serving in Occupation Germany, England, and Okinawa. After military service he graduated in June of 1956 from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.S. in Business Administration. His employment included 3 years as an investigator for the U.S. Civil Service Commission conducting full field background checks on applicants for positions involving top secret clearances for NASA, AEC, U.S. State Department, all branches of the military service, United Nations, U.S. Information Agency and other federal agencies and private firms. He then served 20 years as a senior field examiner and hearing officer for the National Labor Relations Board, covering N. California, N. Nevada, Hawaii, Guam and Samoa, retiring in June 1986 with over 29 years of service. He married Patricia McMullen in 1948 and they had a daughter, Barbara in 1952, and a son, David in 1954. In 1971 he married Elaine Bellville and divorced in 1974. Ed was an avid reader, followed politics closely, and loved to play scrabble and chess with his grandchildren. He moved to Gardnerville in 1986 and enjoyed hiking and the outdoors. The family requests any donations to be made to the charity of the donor’s choice, or plant a tree or lilac bush in memory of Ed. A memorial service and light lunch will be held November 8, 2014 from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM at 812 Terrace St. in Carson City.
