America the Beautiful, a photography exhibit by Robin Travis, is visiting Comma Coffee’s Backseat Gallery in Carson City.

In 1996, Travis attended her first photography class at St. Petersburg College in Florida. That’s when she knew she had found her passion and an innate ability to capture the beauty around her and a desire to share it with others.

Three years later, the photographer moved to Carson City, and what she calls, “the home of my heart.” Travis says she is drawn to the beauty she initially saw in every direction, from the great mansions and mining cabins, to the crystal clear waters and sandy shores of Lake Tahoe, the wooden sidewalks of historical Virginia City, and the vast alfalfa fields of surrounding ranches. But, she says, it is always the people and the stories that matter most. The stories of the people who worked the land and tended the livestock, who prospected and dug for gold and silver, and the Native people who continue to redefine themselves. It is through learning and knowing the stories that accompany her photographs that Travis imbues her photography with a sense of timelessness.

Travis has traveled throughout the Western Untied States gathering images of people, places, and wildlife that she loves to share. It is in sharing the journey with her fellow travelers that she finds her greatest joy.

An artist reception is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2. Hors d’ oeuvres will be served; beer and wine will be available.

The Backseat Gallery is inside Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St., across from the State Legislative Building.

The exhibition and reception are free and the public is invited. The Backseat Gallery, which presents monthlong exhibitions by regional artists, is a project sponsored and hosted by Comma Coffee.
