Carson High catcher Corine Doran extends the bat for a hit Tuesday in the first round of the Class 5A regional tournament against McQueen. Doran knocked in two runs in the sixth to help seal the Senators' opening-round win.
Caydee Farnworth was immaculate, by definition, Tuesday night in a 3-0 win over McQueen top kick off the 2021 Northern Nevada Class 5A regional tournament.
The junior only needed nine pitches in the fifth inning, tossing nine strikes and recording three punch outs.
"Those always feel good," said Farnworth. "It's one of those games where you're dialed in and you keep going at them."
She recorded 12 strikeouts and allowed two hits in seven innings of work.
She threw a total of 81 pitches, 62 of them were for strikes.
"It just pumps me up more, honestly," said Farnworth, who now turns to the Senators next opponent.
With the win, Carson moves into the second round of the regional tournament and will travel to No. 1 Spanish Springs – who beat No. 8 Damonte Ranch 10-0 Tuesday.
The Senators have dropped both meetings against the Cougars this season, 10-0 and 2-0.
First pitch against Spanish Springs will be 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Doran, Luschar provide spark at the plate
Carson was still hoping it could provide its pitcher with more run support, heading into the late innings.
Up to the sixth, the only runner to cross the plate successfully was Kedre Luschar after peppering the first pitch of the game directly over the center field wall.
The Senators had left runners on in the second, fourth and fifth while also having a runner caught at the plate after a wild pitch.
Corine Doran stepped up in the sixth with runners on second and third and went to the opposite field to drive in two insurance runs for Carson.
"It felt really good to finally get Caydee some insurance runs," Doran said. "Being the cleanup hitter, it's good for me to get in runs."
"Cory is always clutch," Farnworth said.
Doran also drove in Shannen von Duering, who doubled off the wall to open the sixth.
With the focus turned to the Cougars and a quick turnaround, the Senator hitters will have to find a way to get to junior Hailey Mclean, who boasts a 1.24 ERA this season.
"I think we need to get on the pitcher quickly," said Doran. "We need to be disciplined and not give her any strikes."
"She's the MVP of our league. She's shut everybody out this year and we have to go in there with a plan," said Carson High head coach Carlos Mendeguia. "It is not going to be an easy task facing her."
