For the first time in Virginia City Middle School history, both the sixth-seventh grade and eighth grade boys basketball teams claimed titles at the Sagebrush League Tournament.
The tournament was held on Saturday in Coleville. Both teams finished with overall records of 10-3, 7-1 in league and 2-0 in the tournament. Virginia City's opponents this year included Dayton, Yerington, Smith Valley, Coleville, Hawthorne and Schurz.
Grizzlies lose a heartbreaker
The Tahoe Grizzlies Pee Wee hockey team lost a heartbreaker this past weekend, falling to the San Francisco Sabercats 5-3. The Grizzlies also lost to the San Jose Junior Sharks 7-1.
Against the Sabercats, Carson City's Matt Premo scored with late in the first period to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. Carson City's D.J. Freeman scored in the second period to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead.
After the Sabercats scored three unanswered goals, South Taho's Tyler Dill scored on a pass from Premo to pull the Grizzlies to within 4-3 i n third period. The Sabercats scored in the final seconds for the final margin.
South Tahoe goalie Shane Whitt, starting in his second game, stopped 32 shots. The Grizzlies also received solid play from South Tahoe's Luke Weinberg and Dill, Premo, Freeman and Gardnerville's Toshia Aikens.
Against the Sharks, Freeman scored the Grizzlies' only goal. The Grizzlies also received solid play from Randy Hutton, Dill, Freeman and Premo.
After a two-week break, the Grizzlies will begin league play against the Sabercats.
