CHS golf fund-raiser set

Carson High boys golf team member Isaac Holt is holding a fund-raising golf tournament for the team as part of his senior project.

The tournament will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 24 at Thunder Canyon Golf Course. Cost is $60 which includes a box lunch. For more information, call (775) 720-3574.

Locals shine again in Las Vegas rodeo

The Carson-Douglas Rodeo Club enjoyed another successful showing at this past weekend's rodeo in Las Vegas.

Karysa Perez turned in a consistent performance, posting second, sixth, sixth and seventh place finishes in girls cutting. In boys cutting, both Jonathon Glocknitzer and Byron Kreck finished with third, sixth, seventh and seventh place finishes.

Elyse Heberger had fifth and sixth place finishes in barrel racing and a seventh place finish in pole bending. Cory Hershkowitz took second in bareback riding in Saturday's go-round while Cody Kiser was third on Saturday and Sunday.

The club will host high school rodeo participants from throughout the state at its annual rodeo on April 12 and 13 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Cutting will be held on April 11 at Gardnerville's Corley Ranch and the rest of the events will be held on April 12 and 13.

Damonte wrestling coach resigns

Damonte Ranch wrestling coach Kevin Carter recently resigned after a dispute with the school's administration, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported on Wednesday.

Carter resigned after a dispute involving the school's no-contact policy, which basically institutes a dead period not allowing a coach to come into contact with athletes from his or her team for five weeks during the off season.

Carter wanted an exemption to the rule to coach several of his athletes in the High School National Wrestling Championships, but the school wouldn't grant him the exemption.

Beginning next fall, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association will institute a less stringent no-contact policy, which is designed to encourage athletes to play more than one sport. The NIAA policy, though, will allow for exemptions such as the National Wrestling Championships.

Carter resigns after leading Damonte Ranch to the Northern 4A title and second at the NIAA 4A State Championships this past season.

Grizzlies ice hockey loses a close one

The South Tahoe Pee Wee (11 and 12-year-olds) Travel Hockey team lost 4-3 to the California Cougars on Saturday.

The Cougars are currently in second place in the NorCal League. This was by far the best game the Grizzlies have played this season.

The Grizzlies trail 2-1 after one period with Carsdon City's T.J. Olsen scoring on an assist from Carson City's D.J. Freeman and Luke Weinberg. The Grizzlies trailed 3-2 after two periods after Gardnerville's Heath Sunseri scored his first goal of the season. South Tahoe's Tyler Dill also scored for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies had a solid performance both on offense and defense from Freeman. South Tahoe's Kyle Swain and Reno's Ed Kaufer also played well. Goalie Shane Whitt had an outstanding effort, stopping 20 shots.

On Sunday, the Grizzlies lost to the Cougars 8-1. Weinberg scored on assist from Freeman.

The Grizzlies will play the Tri Valley Blue Devils and the Fremont Blackhawks this weekend to finish the season.

Capital City VBC to offer youth training league

The Capital City Volleyball Club will hold a youth training league for girls in third through sixth grades from March 21-May 17.

The youth training league will be organized and run by Capital City VBC staff with the assistance of parents interested in learning more about coaching volleyball. Training and league dates will be 6-7:30 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m.-noon Saturday.
