Hikes this weekend slated for senior center and Sierra Club

There will be hikes of El Dorado Canyon in the Dayton area Saturday for the Carson City Senior Citizens Center and Sunday for the Sierra Club. Membership of either organization is not required to participate in either of these 12-mile round trip hikes. They are open to hikers who are experienced and conditioned. Elevation gain will be under 1,000 feet and the pace will be fast. No dogs allowed. To sign up, call 530-2935 at least two days prior to the hike.




Carson City


Sierra Club meets Wednesday for speech


The Sierra Club will be meeting from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St. Dave Loomis from the U.S. Forest Service, will discuss environmental protection and Forest Service management plans. Also being discussed is the Carson City Lands Bill. First awardees named for Capital City Arts Initiative honors


Capital City Arts Initiative announces its inaugural CAP Awards, established to acknowledge long-term supporters of the arts in Nevada.


The inaugural CAP honorees are Joe McCarthy, Andrea Moore, and Jim McCormick. Each will receive a limited edition cap embroidered with the initials "CAP" at a luncheon hosted at Carson City's classic American diner, The Cracker Box, 1:30 p.m. Feb. 9.


Proceeds from the ticketed event will support CAP, CCAI's art in public program. The Cracker Box is at 402 E. William St.


McCarthy is Carson City's economic development and redevelopment manager. Andrea Moore works as the community relations coordinator for the Carson City Library. Jim McCormick, University of Nevada, Reno Art Department professor emeritus, was CCAI's first board president.


The Capital City Arts Initiative is an artist-centered organization committed to the encouragement and support of artists and the arts and culture of Carson City and the surrounding region.




Alzheimer's presentation Thursday at senior center


There will be a two-hour seminar entitled "Understanding Memory Loss, Dementia, and Alzheimer's Disease" from 4 - 6 p.m. Thursday at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, 911 Beverly Dr., hosted by the Alzheimer's Association. For information, call 786-8061.




Evening storytime Thursday at library


The Carson City Library's youth department will be holding a special evening storytime at 7 p.m. Thursday. Children are invited to wear pajamas for a night of bilingual stories and treats. For information call 887-2244 ext. 1006.

'A Murder Is Announced' adult-reading program


"A Murder Is Announced" is Douglas County Public Library's winter reading program for adults. It begins Jan. 20 and runs through March 2. To sign up for the program, visit either of Douglas County's public libraries. For information, call 782-9841.




'U-Pick-It' raffle Wednesday, benefits Young at Heart


The Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club will be conducting a "U-Pick-It" raffle Wednesday at the Douglas County Senior Citizens Center, 2300 Meadow Lane in Gardnerville. Ticket sales cut off at 11:30 a.m. All funds go to the Young at Heart club. For information, call 783-6455.
