Maule signs with N.M. Highlands

Douglas High graduate and Western Nevada Community College women's soccer star Jessica Maule has signed a letter of intent to play for Division II New Mexico Highlands.

She will be joining the Cowboys as a junior this upcoming season. At Douglas, Maule earned all-Sierra Nevada all-Sierra League first team honors and was the team Most Valuable Player and captain.

As a freshman at WNCC, she was named as the team's Offensive Player of the Year. This past season, Maule helped the Wildcats win the Scenic West Athletic Conference postseason title and was one of four Wildcats named to the all-conference team.

At NMHU, Maule will pursue a degree in criminology and plans to become a police officer. Her cousin, Keith Jardine, "The Dean of Mean," played football at NMHU and is now an ultimate fighter. Jardine will be fighting Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas at Liddell Jackson UFC 71 against Houston Alexander.

Along with being a student-athlete, among her other tasks include volunteering to coach younger players and helping in the family cleaning business while attending school full-time.

Plans underway for Prestella golf event

Plans are underway for the second annual Kenny Prestella Memorial Golf Tournament. The event will be held on Aug. 4 at Empire Ranch Golf Course.

Shotgun start will begin at 8:30 a.m. and participants need to show up by 8. The event will be a four-person scramble, best ball tournament. Cost is $100 per person.

Michaels Cycle Works as donated a Sea Doo with trailer for a hole-in-one. There will also be prizes for two longest drive holes, two closest to the pin holes and drawing prizes.

Cash prizes will also be awarded to the top three teams. All proceeds will go to the Epilepsy Foundation on behalf of Kenny Prestella.

A barbecue pig roast will follow the tournament. Drawing prize donations, sponsors and more golfers are needed. For more information, call Kathy Cox, 887-1762 or Larry Wood, 883-2371.
