High winds heading our way

A high wind warning remains in effect throughout the area until 11 tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Southwest winds of 15-25 mph with gusts to 50 mph will develop this afternoon and increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph by this evening. Local gusts to 70 mph are possible in the foothills west of Highway 395 and in wind-prone areas along

Highway 395, like Washoe Valley. The strong gusty winds will diminish behind the cold front late tonight.

Damage to trees power lines and property is possible with wind of this magnitude. Driving will become hazardous for high-profile vehicles, especially along north-south routes such as Highway 395.

Motorists should use extra caution and remain alert for sudden gusts or cross winds.

This afternoon: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. Windy, with a west wind between 25 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph.

Tonight: A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 42. Breezy, with a west wind between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 60 mph.

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 52. Breezy, with a north wind between 15 and 20 mph.

Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 28. East wind between 5 and 15 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 56. East wind between 5 and 10 mph.

Sunday night: Clear, with a low around 29. East wind around 5 mph.
