Spencer Brinson of Carson High began his quest for a berth in the NIAA Class 4A State Championships by cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win in the first round of the Northern 4A Singles Tennis Championships on Thursday at Carson High School.
Brinson advanced to the round of 16 with the win. Carson's doubles team of Jordan Rogers and Tyler Simms, the Sierra League's No. 2 seeded team, will begin their quest for a state berth today. The top three in singles and the top three in doubles will advance to next week's state tournament to be held at CHS.
Carson coach Kevin Fallon said Brinson and Rogers and Simms have an excellent chance to advance to state, but added they will have to go through a tough field in singles and doubles.
"They're just going to have to play their best tennis," Fallon said. "That's the kind of field you have. It's deep and very strong."
Carson's three other singles players who competed all lost on Thursday. Adam Whitt received a tough draw in Reno High's Kenny Stark and lost in straight sets.
Both of Carson's players in girls singles, Tiffany Moore, and Emily Collins, also lost in straight sets.
Along with Brinson and Rogers and Simms, three other doubles teams will be in action today for CHS. Jon Kane and Ricky Nugyen have received a tough draw as they will face McQueen's No. 1 team.

Boys and girls doubles will begin at 8 a.m. today while boys and girls singles will begin at 11 a.m. The round of 16 and quarterfinals in singles will be held today. The boys will play at CHS and the girls will play at Centennial Park. Semifinals and finals in singles and doubles will be held on Saturday at CHS.
