Western Nevada softball drops four-game series

It was a tough four-game opening series for the Western Nevada College softball team.

As if playing its first games in school history wasn't enough, the team had to open its season against a top 15 team.

Salt Lake Community College, ranked 12th in the National Junior College Athletic Association pre-season softball poll, used its experience in sweeping a four-game series from the Wildcats in St. George, Utah.

"They were way too much for us to handle," WNC coach Scott Rasner said. "And I have a feeling they will be moving up."

The Wildcats fell 9-1 and 5-0 Wednesday, and 9-0 and 8-0 Thursday.

"The scores didn't reflect the way we played," Rasner said. "They capitalized on every opportunity they had."

Every time the Wildcats would get something going, Salt Lake would "make a play and get out of every (inning)," Rasner added.

Amber Huish, former standout at Lowry High School, lead the Wildcats with four hits during the series. Alyson Herman added three hits. Huish and Herman both pitched for the Wildcats (0-4 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference).

Spanish Springs graduate Alex Arciniega added three hits for the Wildcats.

"We learned a lot and we are getting better and better," Rasner said.

The Wildcats return to action today playing a doubleheader against Colorado Northwestern Community College in St. George. Action begins at noon.
