Local club wins area soccer tourney

The CSC Freedom girls U12 team went undefeated over Memorial Day weekend at the Capital Classic soccer tournament in Carson City.

CSC Freedom's two shutouts Sunday placed the girls in first place, winning their division championship.

CSC Freedom girls are from Carson City and Douglas County playing with Capital Soccer Club.

Douglas to host rec volleyball tourney

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will host a 4-on-4 grass volleyball tournament on June 14 during Carson Valley Days at Lampe Park.

Signups will be accepted from teams or individuals and the cost is $15 per player.

There will be a three-game guarantee in pool play, plus an elimination bracket. The number of games and times will be determined by the number of teams signed up. Signups must be in by today. Players must be at least 16 years old to play. Call 782-9828 for more information.

Carson Sharks play well at showcase

The Carson Sharks 16U won three of its five games in the RR Gold College Showcase in Stockton, Calif., last weekend.

The Sharks run-ruled the California Bandits 7-0 in the first game Sunday morning and were led by a no-hit, six-strike out performance on the mound by Lindsay Ashbaugh.

The final game of the weekend found the Carson Shark's defense controlling the national powerhouse San Jose Sharks. Christina Gallegos pitched an outstanding game scattering six hits while striking out two taking the win 2-0. Megan Hein led the offensive attack for the Sharks throughout the weekend hitting an impressive .500 (5-10) followed by Breann Perry .444 (4-9), Lindsay Ashbaugh .357 (5-14) and Mariah Collins (5-15), Marissa Lucido(4-12) and Natasha Wells (4-12) all hitting .333.

The RR Gold/ASA Showcase tournament had more than 100 16U & 18 Gold teams playing a five-game format allowing college coaches the opportunity to watch and recruit players from throughout the West coast at one location.

The Sharks, 9-4-2 on the season, will next compete in South Tahoe on June 13.

Native American Club softball fundraiser

The Native American Club will take on the Carson School District staff in a softball challenge fundraiser June 12 at Western Nevada College. The event begins at 1 p.m. with $3 admission fee (kids 12 and younger are free). The event will benefit the club.

Eagle Valley to hold junior golf program

Golf pro Denise Massaferri will host a summer junior golf program at Eagle Valley Golf Course beginning Monday.

There are two sessions offered - June 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 and July 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 - and run from 10-11:30 a.m. and noon-1:30 p.m. Classes are for children ages 6-12 for a cost of $75.

Sertoma Club to host charity golf tourney

The Carson Sertoma Club's annual charity golf tournament to raise funds for children with speech, cancer and diabetes problems will be held Sunday, June 28 at the Eagle Valley East golf course.

There is a $100 entry fee. Hole sponsorships are $100. For registration, sponsorships, or donations, call Frank Taylor at 885-7579.

Carson volleyball league taking signups

The Carson City recreation adult volleyball summer league is taking signups. Coed teams will play Mondays and/or Wednesdays and women only teams will play Tuesdays.

Registration will run through Friday at the Carson City Community Center from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost is $55 per player for the 16-game season and league play begins Monday. For more information call Jeremiah Teeter at 887-2290 ext. 30429.

Blue Jays to hold golf tourney fundraiser

The Carson Blue Jays will host a golf tournament fundraiser July 12 at Eagle Valley Golf Course on the East course. The event will start at 8 a.m. with a four-person shotgun start.

The cost is $65 per player and $220 per four-some. Hole sponsorships also are available and there will be prizes awarded.

The fundraiser benefits the Blue Jays, which are Carson High School's summer junior varsity baseball program.

Locals qualify for national pool tourney

Team Dean's Machine of Carson City qualified for the 2009 APA 9-Ball National Team Championships, conducted by the American Poolplayers Association, in Las Vegas through their top performance in the local team championship at Diamond Billiards in Reno on May 30-31.

They will be joining more than 600 other teams from throughout North America who will be traveling to Las Vegas to play at the Riviera Hotel & Casino, Aug. 24-29, to compete for a national title and a portion of the $500,000 guaranteed cash and prizes.

"Dean's Machine" are members of the APA Pool League and participate in weekly league play at Decades in Carson City. Team members include: Dean Skelley, Lisa Skelley, Christopher Skelley, Terrance Bradley, Bradly Snyder, Richard Matha, Sherri Matha, and Phil O'Sullivan.
