LAS VEGAS — Nevada could soon become the latest to pledge to give its Electoral College votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the national popular vote, even if another candidate gets the most votes in the state. The measure, which has passed the Legislature and will soon be on the desk of Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak, would join Nevada with 14 other states in an agreement to cast their votes for the winner of the popular vote. The governor’s spokeswoman did not respond to messages on what he might do.

Legislation restoring voting rights to ex-felons who have completed their prison sentences was given final legislative approval Wednesday on a party line vote of the state Senate. Sen. Melanie Scheible, D-Las Vegas, said AB431 restores voting rights automatically upon completion of the inmate’s sentence and expiration of any term of parole.
The Nevada Senate on Wednesday approved legislation removing the statute of limitations from sexual assault. Under existing law, prosecution of sexual assault must be started within 20 years of the alleged crime. AB142 removes that limit, providing that prosecution can begin at any time if the identity of the person accused of the assault is established by DNA evidence.

The Assembly on Tuesday approved legislation removing what supporters described as archaic restrictions on abortions in Nevada. The bill, SB179, sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Yvanna Cancela would repeal a requirement that physicians document a pregnant woman’s marital status. It would also remove a criminal penalty for anyone who causes an abortion without the advice of a physician.

A joint subcommittee Monday directed Public Works to get a better handle on construction inflation and separate that from change orders and other things that are raising the price of state buildings well above their original budgets. The agency will have to report those costs quarterly to the Interim Finance Committee.
RENO — Lawyers for a Salvadoran immigrant charged with killing four people urged a judge on Monday to dismiss some of the charges and throw out his confession, citing procedural errors.
LAS VEGAS — Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford announced that Ernest Aldridge, 78, of Fernley, and Clarence Willis, 76, of Las Vegas, were indicted on a total of nine felony charges for their roles in a scheme to transfer title to homes unlawfully, according to a media release.

The Board of Supervisors held a special meeting on Monday to approve Carson City’s fiscal year 2020 budget. The supervisors voted to approve the city’s $176 million final budget, which consists of a projected $92.7 million in revenue for the general fund, $172.4 million in revenue from other funds, and roughly $4 million rolled over from 2019.
Nevada is ranked No. 6 in the nation by Chief Executive Magazine in its recently announced Best and Worst States for Business in 2019. Nevada moved up from its ranking of No. 12 in 2018. Hundreds of friends, family members and Las Vegas-area residents paid their final respects Saturday to the 51-year-old Democratic state lawmaker from North Las Vegas who died May 4 in Carson City after falling ill.

A gun bill sponsor says she is gutting the main provision that would allow counties to pass stricter firearm laws than those imposed by the state. Afterward, they lined up for pizza delivered by the local Domino’s on Highway 50 East.
On May 6 at about 12:15 p.m., a suspect entered the Bank of America in Carson City and attempted to cash a fraudulent check. The suspect utilized a false identification card. The suspect fled the scene prior to law enforcement arrival.

With just 21 days left in the 2019 Legislature, Senate Democrats on Monday introduced legislation that would completely overhaul the 52-year-old formula that funds K-12 education in Nevada. Brown was arrested on suspicion of possession of meth and paraphernalia as well as attempting to conceal evidence as well as the two warrants. Bail was set at $3,227.

It has been said that good people bring out the good in other people. The sentiment rings true for two very special employees at Pioneer High School, Phyllis Atkinson and Monica Ward. They were nominated by their peers to be recognized for their tremendous efforts. Atkinson is the educator of the year for PHS and Ward is the classified employee of the year for PHS.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford and 43 other attorneys general filed a lawsuit against Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. and 19 other generic drug manufacturers. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut, alleges that the pharmaceutical companies entered into numerous illegal conspiracies in order to unreasonably restrain trade, artificially inflate and manipulate prices and reduce competition in the U.S. for more than 100 generic drugs. The complaint also names 15 individual defendants that served key executive roles and devised, implemented and orchestrated the alleged schemes on a day-to-day basis.

The Senate Finance Committee on Friday approved a bill to make up the shortfall in the Distributive School Account that pays for K-12 education across Nevada. Under state law, the state is required to make up any shortfall experienced by the 17 school districts.

The IMCA Modifieds and Hobby Stocks put on a great show at Fernley 95A Speedway last Saturday night. Unfortunately, the organization of winged 360 sprint cars that had promised track owner Dan Simpson up to 30 cars, only managed to muster four sprint cars. And only two of them answered the call for the main. Simpson was understandably upset, but on the plus side he has signed the World of Outlaws sprint car series to race at the track in September.

Nevada Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson has died. He was 52. A news release from Assembly Democrats says Thompson died early Saturday while receiving “emergency care” in Carson City. The news release did not provide other details surrounding his death.
The new headquarters for Carson City’s fire department was under construction in September 1993 when firefighters received the 911 call that the station was on fire, local resident Jim Powell recalls. “There is no such thing as a routine call in our business, but it’s not very often that firefighters are summoned to a fire station fire,” he said.

After a contentious hearing on wildlife’s request to buy a new southern office building April 4, members of the Interim Finance Committee were much more accommodating on Thursday. The long-vacant building known as Mike’s Pharmacy is vacant no longer. As of May 1, the Nevada Department of Agriculture has lifted all quarantines for Equine Herpes Virus – Type 1 in the state. The Range Task Force passed an interim plan for the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range that now goes to the Board of Supervisors for approval. The plan calls to open the range to clubs, commercial entities, and law enforcement Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., by reservation.
The Economic Forum added just $42.8 million to the total General Fund revenue lawmakers and the governor can spend this session. Of that, $31.4 million is in revised projections for the remaining months of Fiscal Year 2019 that ends June 30. TUESDAY At 7:47 a.m. deputies were called to Behavioral Health Services on Minnesota Street for a report of a patient punching a nurse and fighting with security. Carson City is looking into different ways to raise revenue for road maintenance. The city like all municipalities relies on a portion of the tax on gas and has available roughly $2.5 million for an estimated $15 million in annual needed streets maintenance.

The Peace Officers Memorial Run is traveling up Highway 395 this morning in Douglas County. The annual relay started in Las Vegas last week. Each of the 134 legs of the relay represents the name of a fallen officer.
