The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are considered innocent until proven guilty in court. THURSDAY At 11:55 a.m., Bailey Wilson, 30, of Carson City was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after deputies responded to reports of a welfare check near the 2300 block of North Carson Street. Bail was set at $3,500.

Min. wage, OT rates won’t increase this year

The Nevada Labor commissioner this week served notice the state’s minimum wage will remain unchanged this year. The minimum wage for employers who offer qualified health plans to workers will stay at $7.25 an hour and the wage for workers who aren’t offered health benefits will remain $8.25 an hour.

Members of the legislative money committees were told on Thursday pay upgrades for correctional officers and state IT professionals are vital to keep those staff members from leaving for higher pay. Finance Director Jim Wells said the governor has proposed a pay grade increase for those two groups of workers. A one-grade increase is worth nearly 5 percent on the paycheck.

TUESDAY At 8:37 a.m., a 33-year-old Dayton man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of failure to appear after deputies conducted a warrant service near the 7700 block of Highway 50. Nevada bill would mandate overdose meds at schools, nix Rx

Drugs that can counter the effects of an opioid overdose would be available without a prescription and required at all Nevada public schools under a bill introduced Monday. Members of the Assembly Health and Human Services Committee are responding to an opioid epidemic that federal estimates say has killed at least 165,000 Americans since 2000, including minors who turned to the drugs for recreation or pain relief.

Murder suspect in Fallon faces arraignment

FALLON — One man is dead and a female acquaintance seriously injured after a stabbing at the Overland Hotel on Tuesday night. Fallon police arrested a suspect identified as Mitchell Keith Goodrum, 55, a transient who had moved to Fallon on March 16 from Washington state. He has been charged with open murder and battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm against 72-year-old Warren Edward Butler. Goodrum is being held at the Churchill County Jail. Bail was set at $1,050,000.

Man arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, says Carson City Sheriff’s Office

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are considered innocent until proven guilty in court. Carson City FRIDAY At 8:38 a.m., Sabraa Bewley, 26, of Reno was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and felony assault with a deadly weapon after deputies responded to reports of a domestic dispute near the 1100 block of Division Street. Bail was set at $45,000.

Last defendant in 2016 Carson City murder admits involvement

The trial for the 2016 Grant Watkins murder has been vacated, after the last of the defendants pleaded guilty to charges Friday. Daniel Lease, 22, has pleaded guilty to compounding crimes for his role in the murder. Lease helped the gunman, 22-year-old Reed Skenandore, dispose of the firearm and clothing used during the murder.

Nevada jobless rate dips to 5.1 percent

Nevada’s jobless rate finished January at 5 percent seasonally adjusted and 5.1 percent without that adjustment. That’s actually a tick higher than the 4.9 percent raw rate reported in December. Even so, that’s more than a percent lower than a year ago when the raw rate was 6.5 percent.

Two men recently convicted of domestic violence charges in Lyon County

Two men were recently convicted of domestic violence in Lyon County. On Jan. 4, the Third Judicial District Court sentenced Wesley Huttman, 34, of Baxter, Minn., who was charged with battery to commit sexual assault, after a three-day jury trial in September. The sentence holds a term of two to 10 years in the Nevada State Prison.

Nevada lawmakers asked to fund fight against Yucca Mountain

LAS VEGAS — A state agency asked Nevada lawmakers to commit $3.6 million a year for the next two years to continue a fight against a federal proposal to bury the nation’s most radioactive waste at Yucca Mountain, about 100 miles from Las Vegas.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office: Traffic stop leads to trafficking charge

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are considered innocent until proven guilty in court. THURSDAY • At 10:38 a.m., a 55-year-old Carson man was arrested at a Poole Way residence on charges of violating an extended temporary protection order. He told deputies he had been staying at the residence for three months after his mother advised him the order had been dissolved. The deputy informed him the order was still in effect and he was under arrest despite the mother’s statement she had been letting him stay there. He was held in lieu of $3,000 bail.

Tahoe bonding bills win committee approval in Nevada Legislature

Two bills designed to enable issuance of Tahoe environmental and statewide natural resource project bonds won approval from the Senate Government Affairs Committee on Friday. Sen. Ben Kieckhefer, R-Reno, presented SB197 and SB198 before the committee earlier in the week, saying the bills simply extend the deadlines for issuing bonds under those programs.

Immigration enforcement termed a state’s rights issue in Nevada Legislature

Democratic leaders on Friday argued in support of Sen. Yvanna Cancela’s bill restricting state and local agencies from immigration enforcement, saying it’s a state’s rights issue.

Impact fees bill effectively gutted in Nevada Legislature

A controversial bill that would have enabled Nevada counties to charge each other impact fees for development was gutted Friday and will be replaced with legislation to create a legislative study group. “We’ll keep the bill number, the sponsors, but probably the rest of it we’ll not keep,” Assemblyman Skip Daly, D-Sparks, told the Assembly Government Affairs Committee discussing Assembly Bill 153.

Carson City has hired a new fire chief. Sean Slamon, fire chief of Modesto, Calif., will be starting in early April. “I am extremely excited,” said Slamon. “I absolutely love the area. Artist Gil Martin staging Smaller Works display at Carson City Community Center

When Gil Martin started studying painting, an artist friend gave him a box of art materials and assorted tools. In that box was a book on how to make paint from earth pigments. It sat around his studio for years until one day he picked it up and started reading. His interest piqued, he started driving around looking for colored dirt from road cuts.

Equal Rights Amendment clears Nevada Senate

The Equal Rights Amendment for women on Wednesday won approval from the Nevada Senate. The vote was 13-8 with Independent Patricia Farley and Reno Republican Heidi Gansert voting for ratification. The rest of the Republican members voted no.
