New Big 5 opens doors today

Big 5 Sporting Goods will host a grand opening for its new location in the Southgate Shopping Center today. The store, 4219 S. Carson St., opens at 10 a.m. and the first 100 customers will be eligible for a gift. Its hours are 10 a.m. -9 p.m. Monday-Friday; 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.

Mining touts benefits to state economy

Mining Association Executive Director Tim Crowley said Wednesday that industry provides far-reaching benefits to Nevada's economy over and above the roughly $60 million a year in net proceeds taxes miners pay the state. He spoke Wednesday morning at the Northern Nevada Development Authority breakfast at the Gold Dust West. He said miners are criticized as taking minerals out of Nevada, but that overlooks what they put into the state.

Lodging group rejects tax increase plan

Ten of Carson City's largest hotels say they don't want the city to increase the hotel room tax by three cents, a proposal many had considered supporting last year. In a statement released Wednesday, Terrie McNutt, director of sales and marketing at Courtyard by Marriott, speaking on behalf of the lodging properties said any tax increase would hurt business for the capital's hotels given sluggish occupancy rates.

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All suspects are innocent until proved guilty in court: • Cathy Vause, 55, of Carson City, was arrested at 11:20 a.m. Monday at the Carson City jail on suspicion of destroying jail property, a gross misdemeanor. Vause allegedly bit her jail-issued mattress and tore a hole in it and then purposely tore her jail-issued shirt. Bail was set at $5,000.

Chinese New Year: Long noodles for a long life

This recipe was handed down to Carolyn Jung by her late mother, May Jung. With its beef and tomato combination married to crispy Chinese noodles, it's a blend of cuisines.
