There are better ways to fund public schools than to sell off public lands. But that's what the Bush Administration is proposing to do with 300,000 acres of national forests, including more than 2,000 acres of Tahoe National Forest in Northern Nevada. The Bush plan would raise about $800 million.

Almond paste complements the tart lemon and nutty poppy-seed flavors in this rich-tasting, festive cake topped with a drizzle of icing. It's an attractive dessert to serve for any occasion, holiday or family day, especially if you play up the spring-like look and decorate it with a garnish of little marzipan lemons.

By protesting an immigration proposal that would have made illegal aliens felons, local high school students were standing up against something that would have had a direct and dramatic impact on many of their families. By most accounts, the more than 200 students who walked out of Carson High School on Monday were orderly and well mannered. Their efforts and those of many thousands of other people around the country helped steer lawmakers away from legislation that would have punished illegal aliens.
The U.S. Department of Energy is demonstrating once again that it sees Nevada as an opponent in its headlong quest to complete the Yucca Mountain nuclear-waste repository. And that's just another way of saying that the feds don't care about the concerns of state residents who would have to live next to 77,000 tons of nuclear waste.

Last week, the archbishop of Boston, Sean Patrick O'Malley, became a prince of the Catholic Church and was made a cardinal. In becoming one, he has had to forego the frugal attire of a Franciscan friar (black robes and sandals) and change to the brilliant "cardinal" red of his new rank. He mentioned in passing, that, in his new get-up, he could now go hunting with Dick Cheney. But, may we advise His Eminence ... wait 'til after bird season ...

We get upset when we note that American children do not perform as well on some tests as some children in other countries. More often than not, our competitive drives influence our judgment, leading us to believe that American children should perform as well or better on these comparative tests.
Seeing Hurricane Katrina's devastation has brought a new outlook to eight Nevadans who recently helped rebuild a small part of the storm-ravaged area.
When I was 7, we had lived in the United States for a year, and in many ways I felt at ease. No longer was English a foreign language, and I loved school. But at home, in the apartment above Kresge's dimestore, I turned back into a Latvian. My parents socialized only with the few other Latvians in town, and I didn't have any close American friends. In fact, my mother was largely my world.

Here's a news flash. America is in serious debt. There was a new warning of this problem last week when Congress increased the debt limit to $9 trillion dollars. And with the budget the Senate passed the same day, it will not take long before they are increasing that limit again.
Bang! Bang! You're dead! As simple as when we were kids playing with cap guns or air guns plugged with cork stoppers. Bang! Bang! You're dead! Today, kids are more likely to blow the back of someone's skull off and spill their brains like a cracked egg into a mug of beer. It's too easy. Just too damn easy. A gun in the hand is worth two behind the security of a display counter. Bang! Bang! You're dead!

Even if it didn't feel like spring last week, I know that it's on its way because my bulbs were peeking out of the snow. I don't know this personally, but my husband, Ralph, has been giving me an update on the happenings and the weather in Carson City while I'm down at our little place in the desert near Palm Springs, Calif.
Newcomers to Northern Nevada don't know anything about Reno's funky old Liberty Belle saloon and its colorful history, and that's a shame because when the 48-year-old establishment closed its doors earlier this month, it marked the end of an era. The Liberty Belle opened in 1958 just four years before I came to Carson City, and I've been a frequent customer over the years, stopping in on my way to downtown Reno in the old days or to attend luncheon meetings of the "GOD" (Good Old Days) Club in recent years. The last GOD Club get-together at the Liberty Belle was on Friday the 17th, when co-owner Marshall Fey recounted the saloon's history and discussed what would become of its valuable collection of vintage slot machines, many of which were designed by his grandfather, inventor Charles Fey.

When the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday overturned the conviction of two people accused of stealing artifacts from public lands, it sent a troubling message - the theft was not that big of a deal. But it is a big deal.
Sue Morrow told and edited thousands of stories for the Nevada Appeal during nearly 30 years at the paper. She still edits the paper today. Before she retired as city editor in 1994 she did it because it was a job, one that she loved.
The Carson City School District is planning to ask voters this fall to approve $25 million in school improvements without an increase in taxes. Unlike some public entities, school districts can't fund large infrastructure improvements and upkeep by saving for a rainy day. Instead, when the roof needs renewal and the boiler is nearly blown, the school district borrows money, which requires voter approval. I support continuing the existing school tax to fund infrastructure improvements. It's the equivalent of a home equity loan for our schools and the only way the district can maintain its facilities for decades of use.

No one should have been surprised to learn that corrupt Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff was deeply involved with virtually unregulated Indian and Internet gambling. After all, shady activities and characters go together like birds of a feather.
A syllogism, in logic, is two premises leading to a conclusion (A + B = C)...or in mathematics, a transitive property of equality (a + b = c, therefore c = a). So, explain to us how sending 700 more troops to Iraq and cutting the school safety budget by 20 percent + raising the deficit by billions more = good for this country. Speak to us, George...the logic and math don't add up...

As cars and trucks creep along at a walking pace, it's also one of the few times when bumper stickers earn their place in the greater public discourse.

When historians look back at our time and try to determine what went wrong, they may point to our president, who is short on vision and long on hubris. But they will probably conclude that we, the people, simply did not understand what we were doing. Take, for example, President Bush's recent words to the American Legion:

Mallard's is having its "microbrew" tasting the day before (on Thursday) at 6 p.m. (reservations 885-1019), so you know where we'll be. The Station Grill always serves great Irish fare that day, and we see that Stew's Sportatorium will be having a rousing party on Friday (along with probably every other pub in town) ... so you have no excuse to stay home and mope. Just remember that great Irish saying, "May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead."

A group of Nevadans has envisioned what's perhaps the perfect development for Carson City. Now comes the hard part. The proposed $50 million Chinese Workers Museum of America, which would include a six-story glass "mountain" - on public land in east Carson City, would have 250,000 square feet of space. That's larger than the Wal-Mart in Carson City. Estimates are that it could draw a half-million visitors each year. The museum and developments around it could employ thou

With his popularity ratings dropping below 40 percent and his Iraqi misadventure in disarray, President Bush and his remaining Republican allies are facing an uphill battle in this fall's mid-term elections. Unless the president can turn things around before November, the GOP could lose control of Congress for the first time since 1994. The clearest indication of the depth of Bush's multiple problems is that many congressional Republicans are in open revolt against his policies, ranging from Iraq to immigration to his proposal to sell six busy East Coast ports to a company based in the United Arab Emirates.
There are a number of good debates taking place in the comments section on nevadaappeal.com, with something new every day. People have a lot to say about a whole range of issues, and believe me, they aren't shy about expressing themselves. It may get a little wild on these comment boards, but I think it's one of the best things we ever did. News should be a conversation, not a lecture, and the online comments are a way for everyone to join the discussion.

On Monday, 45 workers from the state Department of Information Technology began moving out of a building so poorly constructed that it would be comical were there not significant safety issues at stake. The Kinkead Building needs no introduction among state workers and others who have read about their plight over the years. The floor sags or tilts several inches in some of the rooms, enough to cause drawers to open by themselves and chairs to roll away.

What happens when you put 800 members of high school spirit squads in one place? You get a lot of noise, for sure, but also a healthy shot in the arm for the local economy. When I got off the phone with Karen Rogers a few weeks ago, I began to sense there was something different about Carson City. Simple answer, time to get on to the next classified ad.
Erich Fromm once defined dreams as "a microscope through which we look at the hidden occurrences in our soul." Certainly, most people believe their dreaming to be important. Austrian Nobel Prize winner Otto Loewi reported dreaming of chemicals being released from the end of a nerve. He knew he was onto something but assumed his dream was incomplete so he decided to try to finish it the following night. His dream the following night helped him solve the mystery of how nerve cells transmit and receive messages.

We notice the defendants in the Rios trial haven't missed many meals ... they should be sentenced to the same diet they gave the kids. Judge Willis' heartfelt comments spoke for most of us at their arraignment. And speaking of the kids, we hope the other three are receiving lots of counseling and support ... their psyches have got to be in chaos, too. We wish the children and their caregivers well ... and a long sentence to their alleged oppressors ...

In our society, police officers have a lot of power. Of course, that power is kept in check by the judicial branch of government, but, for the most part, they have a pretty wide rein. As a result, law enforcement officials are held to a higher standard. We trust that they're working in society's best interest. You can always tell when there is an election coming up by the sounds of reasoned principles shattering as our elected representatives throw rocks through them in order to install the proper window dressings for their campaigns. There was a lopsided vote in Congress last week to renew the Patriot Act, as most senators rushed to prop up their get-tough-on-terror credentials, afraid someone might label them as weak.

Over a two-year contract, that $50 a month plan will cost you $1,200, not including the cost of the phone (yes, that's separate) and any extra "cool" things, like text messaging or Internet access.
