In Lyon County, Hillyard is more than a person's name

The special session of the Legislature demonstrated what elected officials can accomplish when they put aside political posturing and partisanship and focus on what's best for the people they were elected to serve.

An inspiring event honored some special people

The Community Awards luncheon was inspiring. It showed us how many dedicated people there are in this and surrounding communities who give of themselves and make life better for the rest of us (just like the 300 people who turned out to see if their bone marrow matched Cameron Hardy's ... we hope some did). Thank you.

America is still loved abroad

During the presidential election campaign we'll hear many dire claims about how unpopular America is throughout the world, and how much we are hated by foreigners. Well, just back from a two-week trip to England and Ireland, I can report that much of the world's alleged anti-Americanism is the product of hype and exaggeration.

Wind farms won't solve Nevada's problems

Can legislators dance? A modest and fun proposal for raising funds

Nevada's current budget crisis stems primarily from state government's inability to raise sufficient revenues to pay for ongoing operations during recessionary times. The traditional methods that Nevada uses to raise revenues work well during boom times, but are incapable of providing a steady cash flow during hard times.

Buckley should share the blame for state's budget problems

I hope many Nevadans had a chance to catch Speaker Barbara Buckley's (D-Las Vegas) response to Gov. Jim Gibbons' radio address Thursday evening, regarding the budget predicament the state faces.

Supreme help could save John McCain's bacon

There's something a lot of Republicans need to learn, especially this year: Many voters don't vote with their heads, but with their hearts. The person they select on their ballot isn't always a logical choice, but an emotional one. So Republicans who can and do come to the absolutely logical conclusion that the November election is a choice between John McCain and Barack Obama need to understand that for a lot of conservative voters that logic simply isn't enough.

Farmers markets are the place to shop for nutritious, tasty produce

I have been shopping at roadside fruit stands and farmers markets forever it seems. Back in the '80s a farmer named Bruce Gossett came from Yuba City every weekend starting around mid May and set up his "fruit stand" on the corner of Highway 50 and Dayton Valley Road, where the Chevron station is now.

In memory of Pvt. Daigle: Carson man visits the battlefield where his uncle was killed

Three weeks ago, I wrote about following in the footsteps of my uncle, Pvt. Richard E. Daigle, in Italy for Memorial Day. He was a member of the First Special Service Force, an American/Canadian unit during World War II and was killed in 1943.

Fathers can change the world

When talk turns to finding solutions to some of our society's most profound problems, including underperforming students, drug abuse and the proliferation of gangs, attention frequently focuses on finding more money for schools, teachers and law enforcement.

Both candidates are dealing with divided parties

As we head toward Election Day, Nov. 4, the presumptive nominees of both major parties, Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, face similar problems: reuniting their divided parties.

The world of exchange-traded funds

Those of us in the financial services business have been noticing how many new exchange-traded funds are being launched every month. I remember this happening with mutual funds back in the 1990s. I would see so many new funds with every objective and risk tolerance imaginable coming on line that I could not keep up with them.

Ideas to keep dad busy on his special day

Happy Father's Day on Sunday, and Happy Flag Day on Saturday. Also, with all this excitement, we have the Rendezvous on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and train rides (with dads riding free) at the Nevada State Railroad Museum on Saturday and Sunday. Soooo, kill two birds with one stone, and take dear old dad out for a free ride on the train, and then to the Rendezvous and see "how it was" when he was a kid (just kidding). No excuse not to have a good time spending time with Dad.

The intra-party civil wars that weren't

No one likes a good fight more than our ubiquitous news media.

Letters to the editor

I went on a pretty impressive ride on Memorial Day. It was a memorial ride. Seventy five bikes showed. A procession of headlights and loud pipes that was at times two miles long, two bikes wide. The really impressive part of it was that all these bikes were riding together today in remembrance of one guy: Randy Olsen, who died on his bike recently. We were also there as a show of support to his wife, Lana.

Welcome to Yucca Mountain Appreciation Month

Last August, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid told colleagues at a Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources hearing that "Everyone knows the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump is a dying beast," challenging them to "take the focus away from this dead project." Just last month Sen. Reid still was performing his last rites ritual on Yucca, declaring at a press conference, "I think (Yucca Mountain) is on its death bed."

Expect higher equity markets by the end of year

U.S. equities stumbled into June, driven lower by negative news flow out of the financial sector, rising oil and natural gas prices, and continued fears about the state of the global economy, in my opinion. For the trading session, the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 134.50 points, or 1.06 percent, to 12,503.82. The broad-based S&P 500 fell 14.71 points, or 1.05 percent, closing at 1,385.67. The technology-laden Nasdaq Composite dropped 31.13 points, or 1.23 percent, to close at 2,491.53.

Simplistic answers won't work for complicated problems

I do not want to pay more taxes. I don't know anyone who does. But I also don't want to see the good work of our public policy makers, and the men and women in government service, crumble because of troglodytes like Mr. Muth. Mr. Muth appears to have little understanding of Nevada's past and no vision for its future.

Governor didn't create budget crisis, but it's up to him to find solutions

It's fashionable these days to give our embattled governor a kick while he's down, and now even the national media and some of his former political allies are descending. He's brought much of that on himself, of course, with questionable behavior in his personal life and questionable decisions and statements in handling the affairs of Nevada.

Imagination can lead you back in time

I began hiking up King's Canyon Road about 10 years ago largely because of an old sketch I had seen of Hank Monk (immortalized by Mark Twain) driving a stagecoach pell mell down a steep mountain road with rocks and stones flung like spray from beneath the wheels of his swaying coach.
